At the end of my visit, Shepard shares with me a tattered National Geographic from 1993. Sun-worn and weathered, the magazine includes a feature story about his hometown, the one with the multicolored river.

He flips the magazine open to two full-page color photos. In one, a bright red river bubbles past an old brick factory. The other was taken at precisely the same spot many years later. There is one significant difference: The river runs clear.

For Shepard, the lesson of these photos is the lesson his farm teaches him every day.

“We can turn it around, and we can turn it around so fast,” he says. “Just yesterday, my wife and I noticed something in the pocket ponds we had never seen on our farm. The ducks are back.”

As I pull out of Shepard’s driveway a few minutes later, heading past the three-thousand-plus-acre chemical farms and back through the tiny 667-person town of Viola, Wisconsin, I keep thinking about rehabilitated rivers and resuscitated fields, about nature’s gravitation toward health, abundance, and renewal. For this moment, I am buoyed by the clarity that we have nature on our side; if only we would remember that we’re batting for the same team.
